David Kiyabu first discovered stone upon working part time for a sculptor. He became inspired and spent the next couple of summers training abroad before finally moving to Pietrasanta, Italy to work independently. Receiving guidance from artigianis, Livio Del Bianco, Mirio Viviani and Nicola Stagetti, he has adopted the simple philosophies of perseverance and staying true to his craft. He has a B.F.A in Sculpture from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and has worked in many artistic genre’s following his passion for creative expression.
Although he also works in bronze and some mixed media, stone is his primary material, as he creates interpretations of his past through contemporary forms and enduring mediums. He feels fortunate to have been raised in the islands with all of it’s beauty and diversity and strives to create sculpture that is meaningful and true… Every work is a gesture of his life and he welcomes viewers into his thoughts and representations
